Question: When should I get my job search started?

Answer: Great question and the short answer is now! Whether you’re in your first term or you can see light at the end of the graduation tunnel, we recommend getting prepared for your job search and career transition sooner rather than later. Let’s take a look at some suggestions to help you get underway:

  • Get your documents ready. Take time now to update your resume, create a template for your cover letter or establish your LinkedIn profile. Gathering a few relevant job postings to help you understand what employers are looking for (e.g. relevant skills, knowledge and experience) is another good stepping stone to being ready-to-go.
  • Take a workshop. If you feel like you need a refresher or could benefit from a ‘nudge’ to get started, join one of our virtual workshops (live, 1-hour) or an online course (self-study). We offer flexible options on a variety of job search topics – check out our events calendar for the schedule. If you don’t feel like you can commit time for a workshop, tap into our self-serve resources.
  • Make industry connections. You’re working hard towards your career goal and no doubt have your sights on a great job with a great employer. To help you land that job, it’s smart to meet with employers and industry pros. Take advantage of opportunities to attend events to learn about career paths, industry trends and most importantly, establish a relationship with potential employers. While doing this, you’re also developing your networking and social skills – so it’s time well spent!

If you’re wondering how to make these connections … the Career Services team has you covered! We will be kicking off our ‘season’ of employer and industry events with our all virtual Career Week | October 5 – 9. This week offers a variety of events from industry-led panels and employer hosted virtual coffee chats (aka small group networking sessions) to a Tech Career Fair – all designed to connect you with employers, provide opportunity to learn from industry professionals and set the wheels in motion to launch your career.

For full details, check out our Career Week site. And don’t miss out on the ‘pre’-events to help you prepare like a pro. Be sure to register – and early. Career Week is just the beginning, keep current by keeping an eye on our events calendar throughout the school year.
