Take Taxes Into YOUR OWN HANDS

Take Taxes Into YOUR OWN HANDS

Info From: The Canada Revenue Agency

Do your parents still take care of your annual tax business with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)? Maybe it’s time to take your taxes into your own hands – literally! As of last year, Canadians could use their iPhones to take a photo of their T4 slip, and let an app do the rest, including emailing the completed tax return to the CRA – all within 45 seconds. It couldn’t get any easier, or efficient. If you use NETFILE and are expecting a refund, your money will be direct deposited into your account within 8 working days (weeks faster than if you submit a paper return). If you are still putting pencil to paper and then mailing in your tax returns, it’s high time to join more than 70% of British Columbians and file electronically. Not only will you help the environment by conserving paper, but you also save time and
mailing costs.

The Agency has never offered more electronic services, for both individuals and businesses. You can deal with virtually all of your tax matters online by using My Account or My Business Account, which are both available at www.cra.gc.ca/electronicservices. Amend your return, track your refund, change your address, and much more, all with a few clicks of a mouse. With so many services available online, it’s easy to stay on top of your tax affairs year-round, rather than scrambling in late-April.

Still not convinced that you can manage your own taxes? The CRA’s easy-to-follow online learning tools, including videos, guide you through the basics of completing your tax form, and also provide information about more complex topics like reporting business income. You can access the videos and webinar details at www.cra.gc.ca/videogallery.

Regardless of how you do it, it’s important that you file a tax return for yourself or your small business. By not filing, you may miss out on potential benefits like the GST credit, and you do a disservice to your friends who fulfill their tax obligations. When we don’t pay our taxes, there is less money available for services that we all rely on, such as health care and employment insurance, so do your fair share and file – it’s never been easier. And then you can sit back and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing that you contributed to making Canada the best place in the world to live.

Don’t miss the latest CRA news or tax tips – follow the CRA on Twitter @CanRevAgency or the Agency’s Commissioner, Andrew Treusch @AndrewTreusch. To get started on
your taxes, visit the CRA Video Gallery and watch a how-to video just for students

The Results Are In

U-Pass BC program renewal referendum successful at BCIT

The referendum to renewal of the U-Pass BC program was successfully passed, according to referendum results that were announced today.
Eligible students cast their ballots online from February 15 to 26 for the referendum that ended at noon today. Students voted in favour of keeping the U-Pass BC Program and its planned increases over the next three years.
The BCIT Student Association (BCITSA), who organised the referendum, was pleased that students came out and made their views heard by voting.
“It is important that decisions like this, which impact students, can be made by students,” said Mike Hanson (VP External, BCITSA). “We would like to thank all those involved who made their vote count.”
The result mirrors similar post-secondary institutes, students at UBC and VCC have already voted overwhelmingly to stay with the U-Passes.

And the results are…

The BCITSA is excited to announce that of the eligible students who voted, 91.2% voted in favour of renewing the U-Pass BC Transit Program, and as such, the referendum has been passed.

Doggy De-Stress February 19

Doggy De-Stress Day at the BCITSA

Are you stressed? Do exams make you anxious? 1 in 5 Canadians suffer from Mental Health issues every day and it is the number one counselling issue at BCIT. To support our students, the BCIT Student Association (BCITSA) is hosting Speak Up Speak OUT, an annual mental health awareness week at BCIT Feb 18th-22nd.

New this year is a Doggie De-Stress Day on February 19th featuring cuddly canines of different breeds to help students relieve their stress and brighten their day. It is proven that simply spending time with furry friends can greatly reduce people’s levels of stress and anxiety. BCITSA hopes that by spending some time with “(wo)man’s best friend” students will get some much needed rest and relaxation care of our four-legged friends.
